**backstory revealed in Kushiel's Mercy
Casimar Shahrizai is Melisande's father. He had an affair with Victoire de Maignard, an Azzallese lady married into a Kusheline line. She refused to acknowledge a son born during the time as his, despite his obvious appearance; as a result, Casimar ruined her family financially. Their great-grandson is Leander Maignard. (KM 158-9).
